The Julie Valentine Center Run2Overcome 5K and 10K Run

Hey! Hey! I completed my 2nd 5K! (I totally didn’t plan that corny, but awesome introduction btw!)

As I did last time, I really wanted to blog about my experience. What was different, what was the same, blah blah blah blah….

The 5K was called the 2nd Annual Run2Overcome 5K and 10K. They also had a kids run...and OMG those kids were freaking fantastic and adorable. The run was put on for the Julie Valentine Center (JVC). JVC is a non-profit center in Greenville, SC. They are a child’s advocacy center and they offer free services to people who are victims of sexual assault/violence.

In June I decided that I wanted to do another 5K. So I decided to Google 5Ks in my area . About that same time, I saw JVC share the event on their Facebook page (here). So I looked into it because it was for an amazing cause and went to a provider I work with on a very regular basis. The 5K was only $25 and the first 400 people received a shirt. I thought, “hell yes! Let me do this!” I signed up a couple of weeks later. I chose to do this 5K by myself because I didn’t want to feel like I was holding anyone back.

So yesterday morning came. I got up at 4:45 AM because the 5K started at 7:30 and I still had to pick up my packet. I got up and got dressed to go.  I was tired, hungry, and anxious. Remember, I’m a fat girl planning on running at least some of 3.2 miles.

The 5K started and I started walking. I wanted to get a good warm up first. The first mile I ran and walked. The next mile it started getting to me and I started walking….basically the whole thing. A big part of that was this damn hill. I didn’t think my short, little legs were going to get up the hill. I literally thought the whole way, why and I doing this to myself again?

After I made it up the hill there were these two volunteers who looked at me and said, “You made it up the hill! There are no more hills!” I gave him a high five and walked my ass on.

That almost completed my 2nd mile...and I was last in line except for an old man that was walking with a walking stick….

I had to keep telling myself to quit talking to myself negatively...because again, I wanted to cry. (I’m such an emotional person!) I just had to keep telling myself, you can do this!

I would say it was around the time I finished the 2nd mile is when my endorphins started to kick in (just like last time).

I was determined I was not going to finish last! I was going to get this shit done! So I started to run.

I still ran off and on, but honestly, my little short legs ran most of that last mile.

There was one more small hill that dropped off into Cleveland Park. Saw I ran over that hill, a bunch of people started cheering...They were changing my number and giving me high fives. A good friend that I work with (who is employed through JVC) told them when Kathy comes over that hill start chanting “303.” So they did. This one lady was like, “you go girl!” As I rounded the corner, Gentleman by PSY came on and I was like, I’m not stopping now. As I rounded another curve another woman started “girl you’re doing really awesome! Give me a high five!” As I was crossing the finish line there was this man who was taking pictures and was like “hey! I want to take your picture!” So I gave him a thumbs up and he snapped it. (I’m still waiting on confirmation from him to post it on here.)

I did this by myself so I didn’t feel like I was holding anyone back, so I didn’t expect for anyone to be cheering for me. It felt awesome for people to be coming up to me and saying “Girl, you did real good!”

I finished the 5K in 56:33 minutes. I’m pretty sure that it took me 20 minutes longer the first time because I didn’t run near as much...and did I mention I have really short legs?

Again, I was determined not to finish last, so I didn't! I finished 234 out of 244 lololol.

Also cool, was that I got a shirt and a water bottle from doing the 5K.

My only issue with the 5K was not the event, but the humidity of the day. It wasn’t particularly hot..just humid.

What I learned from this 5K: I really need to have an upbeat playlist for my next 5K (yes, next one!). I have got to start talking to myself more positively during these things. Once I started doing that I started feeling more upbeat and I started feeling like I could do it. This made me want to find a very upbeat song and as soon as I found that song, I got excited and started running.

My goal for my next 5K is to continue to run more during my 5K.
Me and Ms. Victoria! Such a kind soul!
